Pathologies

>> Hallux valgus (HV, from the Latin hallux, big toe, and valgus, turned outwards), often accompanied by a “bunion”, is a foot deformity that corresponds to a varus (turned inwards) deviation of the first metatarsal and a valgus (turned outwards) deviation of the big toe (hallux).

>> Hammer toes are deformities of the toes, responsible for pain when putting on shoes as a result of the appearance of corns (calluses). The four outer toes are concerned (excluding the big toe). The most common deformity is that of the second toe in the context of hallux valgus. Interdigital corns can also be included, as can the deformities specific to the 5th toe.

>> Hallux rigidus is defined as arthritis of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe. It is thus a case of wear in the joint, characterised by the progressive disappearance of the joint cartilage, resulting in varying degrees of pain and stiffness.
