LP-ESP®

Lumbar disc prosthesis

The LP-ESP disc prosthesis is the result of 10 years’ research, using state-of-the-art techniques and the work of the Pitié Salpétrière hospital in Paris, the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission), the University of Paris 6 and the collaboration of OSEO Innovation (ANVAR).

The disc is composed of two titanium alloy plates, separated by a deformable part whose purpose is to allow the disc to move naturally.

The LP-ESP disc prosthesis has been optimised so as to reconstruct the mechanical properties of the intervertebral disc and, in particular, its shock-absorbing capacities.

Indications

  • Backache cause by lumbar discopathy resistant to medical treatment,
  • Backache caused by discopathy following treatment for herniated intervertebral disc,
  • Lumbar radicular pain following relapsed herniated intervertebral disc (not including excluded hernias).

The concept

The LP-ESP prosthesis should make it possible to eliminate pain and restore the lumbar curvature and function of a normal disc.

The deformable part has a degree of rigidity that is as close as possible to that of natural intervertebral discs. This rigidity is obtained thanks to a soft cushion made of polycarbonate urethane and a silicon core loaded with compressible beads. This soft cushion, which is joined to the two metal parts, guarantees the shock-absorbing functions and limits the emission of particles into the organism, as well as the calcification of the deformable parts.

Products characteristic

The prosthesis has raised teeth, making it possible to guarantee primary fixation between the vertebrae concerned. A porous, rough HAP (hydroxyapatite) coating on the undercoat of pure titanium (T40) ensures effective secondary fixation.

Ribs, joined to the metal parts, make it possible to transform any movement of rotation between the two metal parts into compression and traction forces on the deformable inner part.
